What Is Poetry?

Poetry is language that makes the fullest use of its sounds, rhythms, and arrangements. It compresses meaning through imagery, figurative language, metre, and form. In Stage 6, students analyse both traditional and contemporary poetry, from the sonnet and villanelle to free verse and spoken word, reading closely and writing imaginatively.
