Understanding Peer-to-Peer Browser File Sharing

Sharing large files over the internet usually involves a third-party server. You upload a file to a cloud provider, wait for the upload to complete, and then send a download link to your recipient. VeloLink changes this paradigm entirely by utilizing modern WebRTC (Web Real-Time Communication) technology to establish a direct connection between your browser and the receiver's browser.

How Does WebRTC File Transfer Work?

Unlike traditional file hosting, a WebRTC application acts purely as a signaling bridge. When you select a document, video, or archive using VeloLink, the file is never uploaded to our servers. Instead, the application generates a unique cryptographic signaling identifier embedded in the URL.

Once the recipient clicks that URL, both browsers perform a peer-to-peer "handshake." After the connection is successfully negotiated, the file is broken down into tiny 64 Kilobyte chunks. These chunks are streamed across the network directly to the recipient's computer using the RTCDataChannel API, utilizing your maximum available local or WAN network speed.

Maximum Privacy with Zero-Server Architecture

Because there is no middleman hosting your data, the privacy benefits are absolute. Whether you are sending sensitive workplace documents, personal family videos, or large software archives, the transfer remains completely secure.

  • No Data Retention: Files are constructed entirely in the recipient's Random Access Memory (RAM). Once the browser tab is closed, any unsaved temporary data is permanently flushed.
  • End-to-End Encryption: WebRTC mandates encryption by default. All data transmitted between peers is encrypted using DTLS (Datagram Transport Layer Security) and SRTP (Secure Real-Time Transport Protocol).
  • Infinite File Sizes: Because you are streaming data chunks rather than uploading a monolithic file, you are not bound by the standard 2GB or 5GB limitations imposed by commercial cloud storage providers. The only limitation is the amount of available RAM on the receiving device.

Why Keep the Tab Open?

The only requirement for peer-to-peer file sharing is that both parties must remain online simultaneously. Because the file resides locally on your hard drive, closing your browser tab severs the connection and stops the file stream instantly. Always wait for the "Transfer Complete" confirmation before navigating away from the page.
