Elden Ring
The most celebrated difficult game of the decade, and the best example of hard-but-fair design in the medium. Every boss, every enemy, every environmental hazard communicates its patterns through visuals before delivering damage. Death teaches. The player who engages correctly — not brute-forcing, but observing, learning, adjusting — finds the difficulty steadily yielding to mastery.
Baldur's Gate 3 (Honour Mode)
Single-save, permanent failure, one chance. Honour Mode does not add damage modifiers — it adds consequences. Every combat decision carries real weight because you cannot reload. The D&D system, understood deeply, provides tools to succeed: correct spell preparation, positioning, and build choices can make impossible encounters winnable. The difficulty is intellectual, not reflexive.
Resident Evil 4 Remake (Professional)
Professional difficulty on a fresh run is a remarkable test of resource management. Every resource decision matters: merchant upgrades, ammunition conservation, healing item timing. Dying on Professional is always a product of poor preparation, not unfair design. That fairness is what makes completing it rewarding rather than merely relieving.
