Blood and Wine — The Witcher 3

Blood and Wine takes Geralt to Toussaint — a sun-drenched, wine-producing region with a completely different visual identity from the base game's war-torn landscapes. The expansion introduces a new cast, a new villain, a new relationship dynamic, and a thematic examination of what a happy ending might look like for a Witcher. It is one of the only expansions that can credibly claim to be as good as the base game.

Phantom Liberty — Cyberpunk 2077

Phantom Liberty transformed Cyberpunk 2077's reputation. The expansion added a new district, a new story with a new ending option, a complete reworking of the game's skill system, and some of the finest writing in the base game's world. Players who had written off Cyberpunk 2077 returned for Phantom Liberty and found a different game than the one they had abandoned.

Hearts of Stone — The Witcher 3

Hearts of Stone is a study in how to write a compelling antagonist. Gaunter O'Dimm — the mirror-eyed merchant — is one of gaming's finest villain designs: quietly menacing, narratively inventive, and genuinely funny in moments. The expansion's central quest is a moral puzzle that has no clean solution, which is exactly what Witcher 3 does best.
