Module 8 at a Glance

Applying Chemical Ideas is about using chemistry to answer real questions: what is in this sample, how much of it is there, and how do we make what we need? It divides into four inquiry questions:

  1. How is the presence of ions determined? — flame tests and precipitation reactions.
  2. How are ions measured? — colorimetry, UV-Visible spectrophotometry, atomic absorption spectroscopy, gravimetric analysis, and precipitation titrations.
  3. What are the properties of organic chemicals? — chemical tests and instrumental analysis of organic substances (NMR, MS, IR).
  4. How can the yield of a chemical product be optimised? — equilibrium, rate, reaction conditions, location and route evaluation (Haber and Contact processes).
Exam tip: Module 8 rewards precise procedure language ("wash with deionised water to remove soluble impurities", "dry to constant mass") and correct significant figures. Every calculation mark is lost or won on working shown.
