An informative text gives clear, accurate information about the world. Its primary purpose is to inform — not to entertain (imaginative) or to convince (persuasive), although a text may do all three with one dominant purpose. Across the NSW English years, informative texts include explanations, descriptions, factual recounts, news reports, procedures and journals.
Information is the currency of learning and of democracy. The student who can locate accurate facts, judge their reliability, organise them clearly and communicate them precisely can participate — in school, in work, in civic life. Conversely, the ability to write information well is inseparable from knowing it well: we understand a topic most deeply when we have had to explain it clearly to someone else.
The NSW English K–10 Syllabus names informative texts — explanations, factual recounts, procedures, reports — as a core text type alongside imaginative and persuasive. Students are expected to respond to and compose information across the stages, moving from simple descriptions and recounts in the early years to structured reports, explanations and researched texts in Stages 4–5. The syllabus also foregrounds the skills of reading for information — locating, selecting, evaluating and synthesising — which are the reading half of the informative mode.

Informative texts come in distinct forms, each with its own structure and job. Naming the form is the first step to both reading and writing it. The table below is the essential reference:

Clarity in informative writing is mostly structure. Three organising patterns do most of the work:

Top students understand that “objective” is a craft: you choose the facts, the order and the words, so objectivity is a deliberate framing, not the absence of choices. Band 6 informative writing is transparent about what it omits and why — honesty is part of accuracy.
Informative composing depends on trustworthy sources. Teach the check: Who wrote it? Why? When? Is it backed up? Concretely, students should ask: Is the author or organisation credible? Does the source state its purpose? How recent is the information — and does it matter? Is the claim supported by evidence or by opinion dressed as fact? And is this the original source, or a summary of a summary? With the rise of digital information, evaluating reliability is one of the most important reading skills the informative mode teaches.

Below is a short, accurate explanatory text on a school-friendly phenomenon — why a beach ball floats but a rock sinks — written to a high standard, followed by annotation.
Objects float or sink because of density — how tightly an object’s matter is packed. Density is a measure of mass divided by volume: the amount of stuff in a space, compared with that space’s size. Water has a density of roughly one gram per cubic centimetre. A beach ball is mostly air, so its overall density is far lower than water’s, about a twentieth as dense; pushed under, the displaced water pushes back harder than the ball weighs, and up it comes. A rock, by contrast, squeezes the same material into a smaller space, so its density exceeds water’s — the water cannot push back enough, and down it sinks. This is why huge steel ships, filled with air, ride high while a single iron nail drops through the surface. As a result, we can predict floating or sinking by comparing densities alone.

Choose the form to match the purpose (explain, describe, recount, report, procedure); plan the structure (sequence, cause–effect, classification); gather accurate facts from reliable sources; draft with precision and signposting; then review for accuracy and clarity — and check your support material. The extract achieves clarity by matching structure to purpose and reader to language. Its classification structure — introducing the topic, then grouping features under headings — lets a reader who is skimming locate the relevant section in seconds, while a topic sentence at the head of each paragraph sets the expectation before the detail. The language is objective and precise: technical terms such as “habitat” and “migration” are used exactly and defined on first use, so the writer signals expertise without excluding the beginner. Where the text risks abstraction, a labelled diagram and a single statistic carry the idea visually and measurably. In short, every structural and linguistic choice serves the reader’s ease, which is the true test of an informative text’s effectiveness.
Write a short explanation of how a natural or social process works. Use a clear cause-and-effect structure, precise language, and one piece of support material (a diagram, table or label).
Why coastal dunes hold back the sea. A coastal dune is a hill of sand built and anchored by plants. First, wind lifts dry sand from the beach and drops it where an obstacle slows the air. Next, the sand piles into a ridge, and hardy grasses take root, their roots and leaves catching still more sand. As the dune grows, it becomes a natural breakwater: during storms, waves lose energy climbing it, so the land behind is protected from flooding. Precise words matter — “accumulates,” “anchored,” “absorbs energy” — because each one points to an exact action. Choosing the wrong form is the most common error in informative composing. A writer who writes a procedure when the task needs an explanation, or a recount when it needs a report, has failed before writing a sentence. Teach students to decide by asking five questions:
